Microsoft Confirms August 2025 Update Breaks NDI Streaming

What’s happening

Microsoft’s August 2025 security update (KB5063878) has introduced a critical bug that is wreaking havoc on NDI (Network Device Interface) streaming workflows.

If you are a content creator, broadcaster, or IT pro relying on NDI for production, you’ve likely seen it:

  • Severe lag and stuttering
  • Choppy audio/video feeds
  • Performance degradation even on low-bandwidth networks

Microsoft has now officially confirmed the issue.

The affected platforms

  • Windows 11, version 24H2
  • Windows 10, versions 22H2 and 21H2
  • (No Windows Server editions are listed as impacted)

Applications most hit include OBS Studio and the official NDI Tools suite, particularly when using Display Capture to stream one PC’s output to another.

Root cause

The update interferes with RUDP (Reliable UDP), NDI’s default transport protocol. RUDP normally balances speed and reliability, but after KB5063878, Windows mishandles these packets — leading to broken streams.

The workaround (until Microsoft fixes it)

While waiting for a permanent patch, users should:

  1. Change NDI Receive Mode from RUDP → TCP or UDP
  2. Follow NDI’s official guidance on their support site (Traffic Drops After Windows Update)
  3. Delay or pause deployment of KB5063878 in production environments

Why these matters

NDI is the backbone of modern video production, powering workflows from live streaming to corporate AV systems. This bug doesn’t just inconvenience hobbyists — it disrupts professional broadcast pipelines.

With Microsoft acknowledging the problem, we can expect either a future cumulative update or an out-of-band patch soon.

Until then: If NDI is mission-critical to your operations, don’t risk your production pipeline without applying the workaround.

Related August bugs to watch

  • Windows 11 24H2 update causing SSD/HDD failures and possible data corruption
  • Emergency fixes for Windows Reset and Recovery errors

Clearly, this has been a rocky August patch cycle for Microsoft.

Takeaway

If your streams are stuttering after the August update — you’re not alone. Switch your NDI mode, monitor Microsoft’s health dashboard, and hold off on KB5063878 in production until a fix is delivered.
